Why is present value less than future value?
Because money today can earn returns. ₹1 today > ₹1 in 10 years. Present value "discounts" the future cash back to what it's worth now.
What discount rate should I use?
Your opportunity cost — the rate you'd earn on an alternative investment of similar risk. For risk-free planning: FD / G-sec rate. For equity comparisons: expected equity return.
