Frequently asked questions
What is future value?
The projected value of a current sum after it grows at a specified rate over a specified number of periods — factoring in compound interest.
Why does compounding matter?
With simple interest, you earn only on the principal. With compounding, you earn interest on previously earned interest. Over 30 years at 10%, compound FV is ~17.4× principal vs 4× for simple.
How does this relate to inflation?
Future value is nominal unless you use a real (inflation-adjusted) rate. To see purchasing power, subtract inflation from your rate and recalculate.
Ordinary vs annuity-due?
Ordinary (end of period) is the default. Annuity-due (beginning of period) adds one extra compounding period and gives a slightly higher FV.
