Frequently asked questions
What is intrinsic value?
The "true" worth of a stock based on fundamentals, independent of market price. Value investing (Buffett, Graham) buys when market price is well below intrinsic value.
How reliable is Graham's formula?
Good for stable mature companies. Less reliable for growth, tech, or cyclical stocks. Use with margin of safety (buy at 70% of intrinsic).
Why adjust for bond yield?
Graham calibrated for 4.4% bond yield (1962). In today's 7%+ environment, discount is needed. Formula now shrinks intrinsic value.
What growth rate to use?
Past 5-year EPS growth, adjusted downward for conservatism. Never use rates above 20% (unsustainable). Be skeptical of analyst forecasts.
