Frequently asked questions
Why is 1% the standard risk?
Mathematics of survival. Losing 10 trades in a row at 1% risk = 10% account drawdown (recoverable). At 5% risk = 40% drawdown (requires 67% gain to recover).
Does this include swap/commission?
No. This is pure price risk. For accurate sizing, either factor swap into stop loss or reduce risk % by 10–20%.
What if calculated lot size is too small?
Raise account size, widen stop loss, or take higher-probability setups. Don't increase risk % — that's the path to blown accounts.
Position size vs lot size?
Same thing for spot forex. In futures, "position size" usually means contracts. Concept is identical: dollar risk / per-unit risk.
