Frequently asked questions
How does the 12% employer split work?
Employer's 12% is split: 8.33% goes to Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS, capped at basic ₹15K = max ₹1,250/mo) and 3.67% goes to your EPF. That's why the employer portion into EPF is smaller than the employee's.
Can I contribute more than 12%?
Yes — Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF) lets you contribute up to 100% of basic. Interest is the same as EPF. Employer contribution stays at 12%.
Can I withdraw EPF before retirement?
Yes, for specific reasons (marriage, home purchase, medical, unemployment >2 months). Partial and full withdrawals are allowed subject to conditions.
Is EPF interest taxable?
Interest on employee contribution above ₹2.5L per year is taxable (from FY22). Contributions below that and all employer contribution interest remain tax-free.
