Why do pay frequencies differ?
Fewer periods = larger per-check amount but same annual total. Bi-weekly (26 checks) is most common in the US.
Why is 26 bi-weekly "extra paycheck"?
26 × bi-weekly = 52 weeks which fits exactly. But sometimes a year has 27 pay dates. Budget as if there are only 26 — treat the 27th as bonus.
Does 401(k) reduce my taxes?
Traditional 401(k) contributions are pre-federal-tax (not pre-FICA). Roth 401(k) contributions are post-tax (no immediate benefit, tax-free later).
