Frequently asked questions
Can I offset lottery losses?
No. Losses from gambling, lottery, betting CANNOT be offset against lottery winnings or any other income.
Is there any exemption?
No. Unlike salary or business income, there is no basic exemption, no 80C deduction. Every rupee of lottery winning is taxed at 30%+.
Why the high rate?
Discourages gambling; treats it as "windfall" income. Also easier for government — high rate, TDS at source, no paperwork.
TDS on prize less than ₹10K?
No TDS but tax still applies. You must declare it in ITR and pay self-assessment tax at 30%.
