Frequently asked questions
Which zeros are significant?
Leading zeros: NOT. Zeros between digits: YES. Trailing zeros with decimal: YES. 0.00560 has 3 sig figs. 560 is ambiguous without context.
Why do sig figs matter?
Reflect measurement precision. Multiplying 3.0 × 4.57 shouldn't give 13.71 (4 sf); it should be 14 (2 sf) — matches weakest input precision.
Scientific notation?
Unambiguous sig fig notation. 5.60 × 10³ = 3 sig figs. 5.600 × 10³ = 4 sig figs. Removes ambiguity of trailing zeros.
Rules for arithmetic?
Add/Subtract: result has same decimal places as least-precise input. Multiply/Divide: result has same sig figs as least-precise input.
