Frequently asked questions
Why use "old" in denominator?
Convention. Alternative (percent difference) uses average of old+new. This calc uses old value, the more common definition for "change".
Can % change exceed 100%?
Yes — if new > 2× old. 10 → 30 is a 200% increase.
What if old is negative?
Ambiguous — signs can flip. This calc uses absolute value of old to keep sign of change meaningful.
% change vs % point?
If rate goes from 5% to 6%: % change = +20% (1/5), % point change = +1. Different metrics — know which is meant.
