Frequently asked questions
What counts as a "need"?
Minimum viable living: rent, basic groceries, utilities, transport to work, health insurance, debt minimums, basic clothing. Premium cable, branded clothes = wants.
Is 20% savings enough?
For retirement planning only, yes. For aggressive FIRE goals, need 40%+. 20% is the "sustainable default" for moderate lifestyle aspirations.
What if needs > 50%?
High-cost-of-living areas or high-debt scenarios. Either (1) reduce needs (downsize/refinance), (2) increase income, or (3) accept lower savings rate temporarily.
When to deviate from 50/30/20?
Aggressive debt payoff mode: 50/15/35. High-income FIRE: 40/20/40. Basic rule is a starting point, not gospel.
